Wanting to combine the powerful message this great man had for our world with the emerging skills of my kiddos, I came up with some kindergarten-y math, literacy and art activities. I've been using some of them in my math and literacy centers and they've been a big hit and the kids are doing a great job with them. In honor of Martin, I'd like to spread some love and share. First, help yourself to the writing freebie down below. It's a bubble map for students to use to write descriptive words about MLK. Next, I'd like to send the whole packet to the first 3 people who comment on this post with an idea that they use to share Martin's dream with their kiddos. Finally, I'd like to have a quick giveaway. To enter, leave a comment if you're a follower and an additional comment if you blog about the giveaway. I'll pick one winner for every 20 comments - the more entries, the more winners! It's going to be a quickie because I'd like the winners to have a chance to use the unit later this week, so I'll pick the winners Tuesday night. Be sure to leave your email!
Leave a comment to enter to win!
Have a great night!
Would love to win this

We usually read "The Crayon Box that Talked" and discuss it taking all of us to get along. I also have an old National Geographic Kids magazine that has a good article about Martin Luther King Jr. that I read to students. Your packet looks great!

This packet looks great. I too noticed that a lot of stuff was geared more towards older kids and not enough for younger kids. I'd love to win this.

We talk about him, read books, show the I have a dream speech... short clip and then talk about what his dream means and why he might've wanted that!

ReplyDeleteWe do a few things right now. We water color paint an earth on a paper plate and place silhouettes of people in all different colors around the edge. We write living in harmony on it. I found this activity from someone abour 3 years ago. I apologize for not knowing who.
I also pass out M&M's and we talk about which one is the best...then we take a bite and all see that they are the same on the inside. We talk about what this means for people and the hearts inside of us.
Thanks for all you do! Alicia

I recently came across a great website that has powerpoints geared towards different age groups about MLK. I showed my 2nd grade class one on Friday and they were engaged the entire time. I highly recommend it. Here's the link: http://www.wartgames.com/themes/holidays/MLK.html

As for your first question, I am going to use MLK to help the kids better understand our school district's theme of believe. This year our school district is using the theme of believe, MLK fits right into that! Now if I could find stuff that they would understand!

ReplyDeleteI would love for my kinders to have an opportunity to learn about Martin Luther King, Jr. I too have had trouble finding material at their grade level. vhair61215@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteWhat a great unit - way to fill a need for the younger students. We generally focus on the dream part and discuss what dream each student has for the future. It's cute to see what discussions arise from the homework writing about dreams for the future. I love several of the suggestions and plan to add them to the books and BrainPop video we already do. Thanks! epolston (at) rowland (dot) k12 (dot) ca (dot) us

ReplyDeleteI know I am late but I have been searching the past 2 weeks for age appropriate MLK lessons and activities. If you don't mind me asking, where did you find the clip art for this work?
